Happy Holi, ching ching
like most large cities around the world, Barcelona has it's share of expats (foreigners) from countries around the world. the expat communities like to celebrate the meaningful holidays from back home. last weekend the citizens from india celebrated Holi. I never got an adequate explanation of the holiday. something to do with Lord Shiva (who was blue), throwing color on people to help them feel closer to God. what are the odds of me getting that story right.
The celebration involved getting colored. in this case the color took the form of powdered dye which was thrown, blown, or wiped on any willing participant (if you are anywhere near the event, you are considered a willing party, just ask me). all the while you colored, you danced or encouraged those on the stage to dance. there was a lot of bollywood dancing going on. as things are, there are not a lot of indians in barcelona. most of the revelers were Hindu want-a-be's so there was a bit of drinking going on and a lot of browny eating (brownies are legal in spain). at one point a sweet young lady holding a half-consummed liter of sangria tried to start a conversation with us. realizing we were spanish language-challenged, she looked at us, and in her best english said, "happy Holi, ching ching." and raised her liter of sangria in a toast to our Holiness. then she took off with the sangria.
we attended Holi with two other families and good time was had by all. until later when we had to get cleaned up.
